Between 1957 and 1972, the Japanese manufacturer Daihatsu produced a mini 3-wheel vehicle called Midget. A second series followed, but much later: this 4-wheel Midget II, produced from 1996 to 2002 and only available in Japan, is less than 3 meters/118 in-long. This pick-up version of the Midget II bears inscriptions and sponsor stickers of the French Grand Sambuc circuit.

An almost unknown car manufacturer outside some Asian countries, Daihatsu is omnipresent in Japan, where its small cars meet success. This first-gen Charade was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1977. It was a hatchback, which was rare at the time, especially for a Japanese model. Its platform is borrowed from the Toyota Starlet, but engines and bodywork are specific.

To take advantage of reduced fees, these cars, that hold one third of the Japanese market, need to observe the following dimensions: 3.40 m long, 1.48 m wide, and 660 cc max. The Daihatsu Hijet, here in an Airport Service version, is part of the Japanese automotive landscape, as a utility vehicle as well as a personal car.
