In 1949 two convertible versions of the Beetle were released. One was a 4-seater, close to the original model and made by Karmann. The other one was a little more sporty 2+2 cabrio, designed by the coachbuilder Hebmüller. Unfortunately, a fire devastated the assembly line at the end of the same year. Production was relocated at Karmann, but never recovered. Only 696 units were built.
