At that time, the Corvair was the only American car with a rear engine. Its air-cooled horizontal 6-cylinder was designed by the ultimate specialist: Porsche. In 1967, the Corvair, first launched in 1959, was declining and sales plummeted after Ralph Nader’s attacks, who denounced the lack of safety on board. That year, the only variant still available was the Monza.
