Land speed record-breaking has long been an obsession. In 1964, Donald Campbell broke the 1956 record which then stood at 634 kph/394 mph. Behind the wheel of the Bluebird CN7, a 4-ton car equipped with a free-turbine engine of 4,500 hp and 52-inch wheels, the British driver reached 648.7 kph/403 mph. The FIA approved this speed on July 17, on (dried up) Lake Eyre in Australia.
