Offered from 1936, the 170V is the most popular pre-war Mercedes model. The V then means Vorn (front) to distinguish this front-engine 170 from the rear-engined 170H. This “wood gasifier” version ran on generator gas, produced by carbonising wood in the built-on wood gas generator. This system was installed on many cars during World War II when gasoline was rare.
