The 300 SLR had a lot more in common technically with the W196 Formula One racer than with the series-produced 300 SL. Actually, this genuine racing car borrowed its 8-cylinder from the open-wheeler. The 300 SLR roadster took part in the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans, which remained famous for the tragic crash involving one of the Mercedes cars during the race. Only two coupes were produced.
