Rear-wheel drive compact family cars gradually disappeared in the 1970s. The success of the VW Golf, in 1974, encouraged other manufacturers to develop their own front-wheel drive models. The Kadett, released in late 1973 (here the colour Opel chose for its introduction at the Frankfurt Motor Show) was the last rear-wheel drive of the line. This coupe variant was a popular rally car.
